Calgary minor hockey, 2026-27

Calgary minor hockey works differently from Calgary soccer, and most of the confusion parents run into comes from assuming it doesn't. In soccer your address points you to one club. In hockey it points you to two, for different levels, and a girl or a recreational player has city-wide options that ignore the address altogether.

Everything below was read from Hockey Calgary's own pages and from each club's own site in September 2026. Where a club doesn't publish something, or we couldn't read it, we say which.

Minor hockey in Calgary is sanctioned by Hockey Calgary, which sits under Hockey Alberta and, above that, Hockey Canada. Hockey Calgary groups its member clubs into councils. Twelve are community clubs, which run the everyday game at every age from U7 up. Four are elite clubs — the Calgary Buffaloes (CBHA), Calgary Northstars (CNHA), Calgary Royals (CRAA) and Northwest Calgary Athletic Association (NWCAA) — which take only players aged 11 to 21, at AA and AAA.

Alongside those, Girls Hockey Calgary runs female hockey from community level through its AA and AAA programs, and Recreational Hockey Calgary runs a non-body-checking stream for older players. Both are open to players anywhere in the city.

Hockey Calgary's rule is direct: “Players must register with their designated Calgary Hockey Association determined by the residence of the player on September 1 of the current playing year.” A player who lives outside the club they want to join can apply to Hockey Calgary for a player release.

What surprises families is that every community district is designated to two clubs: a community member club, and separately an elite member club. So a child who is 11 or older and good enough to try out for AA or AAA does so with a different organisation from the one their younger siblings play community hockey with. Hockey Calgary publishes the directory that maps an address to both.

The two city-wide organisations, Girls Hockey Calgary and Recreational Hockey Calgary, serve all 248 community districts, so the address rule does not limit them.

Divisions are named by the age a player is under, and set by birth year. These birth years are the ones the clubs themselves print for the 2026-27 season, and they agree across every fee page we read.

• U7 — born 2020 or 2021
• U9 — born 2018 or 2019
• U11 — born 2016 or 2017
• U13 — born 2014 or 2015
• U15 — born 2012 or 2013
• U18 — born 2009, 2010 or 2011
• U21 (Junior C) — born 2006, 2007 or 2008

The elite clubs also field U16 and U17 teams inside that range, which is why their fee tables list divisions the community clubs don't have.

In community hockey, players register with their club and are then placed on a team after fall evaluations. One club, the Raiders, puts it plainly: “Each player will be evaluated fairly and placed on a team where they are best suited.” Registering gets a child a place in the program; it does not choose the team.

Teams are grouped into numbered tiers so that teams of similar ability play each other. Hockey Calgary's own 2026-27 tournament list shows how many there are: tiers 1 to 4 at U9, tiers 1 to 5 at U11 and U13, and at U15 and U18 separate body-checking and non-body-checking tiers.

AA sits above the tiers and needs a separate tryout. At U11 and U13 several community clubs run their own AA teams: Knights charges a $150 AA tryout fee, and AA players pay an extra $350 at U11 or $700 at U13 on top of registration; Northwest Warriors and Springbank add $500 at U13; Trails West adds $700. From U13 up, AA and AAA are also run by the four elite clubs, by tryout.

Body checking is not part of hockey for younger players in Calgary. The Raiders' own description of its divisions says “Body Checking is not permitted at U11/U13”, that U15 and U18 add an option for body checking with limited spots, and that Junior C (U21) is a body-checking league.

Hockey Calgary's 2026-27 tournament list reflects the same split: U15 and U18 tournaments are run in separate body-checking (BC) and non-body-checking (NBC) tiers. Recreational Hockey Calgary is non-body-checking in every division.

So a family choosing between contact and no contact at U15 and U18 has a real choice, but the body-checking places are limited, which is worth raising with the club at registration rather than at evaluations.

These are early-bird community registration fees for 2026-27 from eight community clubs, read from each club's own page. Late fees push every figure up.

• U7: $825 (Raiders) to $1,105 (Knights)
• U9: $1,135 (Northwest Warriors) to $1,580 (Springbank)
• U11: $1,270 (Northwest Warriors) to $1,690 (Springbank)
• U13: $1,270 (Northwest Warriors) to $1,800 (Knights)
• U15: $1,270 (Northwest Warriors) to $1,900 (Knights)
• U18: $1,270 (Northwest Warriors) to $1,945 (Knights)

House league at U9 and U11 is much cheaper: $780 to $875 across six clubs. Recreational Hockey Calgary charges $740 for U13 and U15 and $777 for U18 and Junior, GST included.

Elite hockey costs a different order of money. The Calgary Royals publish 2026-27 team fees of $5,800 for U13 AAA, $5,000 for U15 AA and $7,450 for U15 AAA, up to $10,495 for U18 AAA. The Calgary Buffaloes list U13 AAA at $4,000 and U18 AAA at $5,950 plus GST. Those team fees come on top of tryout or registration fees: $295 to $370 for a Buffaloes tryout, $350 to $600 at NWCAA depending on when you register.

Other costs worth planning for: late fees of $50 to $250, a $500 volunteer bond per family at Knights, and equipment, which no club includes. Financial help exists: Raiders lists the Hockey Canada Foundation Assist Fund (up to $500 per player) and the Flames Even Strength Program (up to $750), and Recreational Hockey Calgary offers a subsidy of $750.

We have not been able to read 2026-27 fees for Bow River Bruins (published as an image), McKnight (a document we could not open), Girls Hockey Calgary or Glenlake. That is a gap in our research, not a statement about those clubs.

For 2026-27, community registration opened on 15 June 2026 at Bow Valley, Knights, Northwest Warriors, Raiders, Trails West, Wolverines and Southwest. Early-bird pricing ran to 15 July at Knights and to 31 July at Bow Valley, Raiders, Trails West and Wolverines.

Late fees then started at different points: 16 July (Knights), 1 August (Bow Valley, Raiders, Trails West, Wolverines), 5 August (Southwest) and 15 August (Northwest Warriors, Springbank, Recreational Hockey Calgary). Springbank's page now says 2026-27 registration is closed, and Knights takes registrations after 15 August only if space permits.

The lesson for next season is simple: register in June. A family registering in late September is paying late fees where there is still room, and joining after evaluations have placed most players.

Girls Hockey Calgary is the female club under Hockey Calgary, running community teams and the Inferno and Fire AA and AAA programs. It is city-wide, so a girl anywhere in Calgary can register there instead of, or as well as considering, her community club. It also runs the Sizzle Sticks all-female tournaments.

Recreational Hockey Calgary is for players who want to keep playing without the community or elite track. Hockey Calgary describes it as “available for players aged 11 through 20. All divisions are non body-checking and games are scheduled on set days.” It is also city-wide, and at $740 to $777 it is the least expensive way to play at U13 and above.

Hockey Calgary lists 31 sanctioned tournaments for 2026-27. Most have no published dates yet: Hockey Calgary's own event pages say “Coming soon”. The ones whose organisers have published dates:

• Springbank Rumble in the Rockies, U11: 2 to 18 October 2026, by tier
• U13 Thanksgiving Hockey Classic: 9 to 12 October 2026, AA and AAA co-ed and AA female
• Springbank Rumble in the Rockies, U13: 23 October to 29 November 2026, by tier
• Sizzle Sticks (female): U11 on 20 to 22 November 2026; U13 and U18 on 27 to 29 November 2026
• Springbank Rumble in the Rockies, U9: 26 February to 7 March 2027, by tier
